Effective bullying prevention tactics include school-wide instruction on the behaviors that are expected. Rather than only focusing on rules about what students should not do, schools should also advocate positively stated expectations to students, such as being respectful and kind to others.

Bullying Prevention Month!! Tip#4
All school adults—from bus drivers, to teachers, to librarians—shape the tone and norms of a school community. When adults model respectful behavior, show students that they care, respect students’ voices, and take responsibility for monitoring and effectively responding to student behavior, they create the foundation of caring and respectful communities. Following these acts of kindness and respect can help reduce bullying culture in schools.

Bullying Prevention Month!! Tip#5
It’s very important to instill an anti-bullying mindset in your child. This includes more than just teaching your child not to hit, shove, or tease other kids. Kids should learn that being critical, judgmental, making hurtful jokes, and spreading rumors also are unhealthy and constitute bullying. Cyberbullying is also a big issue for kids. It's also never too early to teach your children about responsible online behavior.

Parents create healthy anti-bullying habits starting as young as possible, coach your children on both what not to do (push, tease, and be mean to others) as well as what to do (be kind, empathize, and take turns). Also coach your children on what to do if someone is mean to them or to another (get an adult, tell the bully to stop, walk away and ignore the bully).

Bullying Prevention Month!! Tip#7
Work with the bully...Don’t forget that the bully has issues to deal with as well and also needs help from adults. Bullies often engage in bullying behaviors out of a lack of empathy and trust, or as a result of issues at home.
Bullies first need to recognize that their behavior is bullying. Then, they need to understand that bullying is harmful to others and leads to negative consequences. You can nip bullying behavior in the bud by showing them what the consequences of their actions are.

Monitor Behavior...Observe your children in different settings by volunteering at school, participating in extracurricular activities and being watchful during social gatherings. If you notice that your children are overly aggressive, vulnerable to peer pressure or exhibit other behavior that troubles you, talk to them about your concerns and redirect the behavior. Be vigilant about the warning signs associated with bullying behavior (e.g., social withdrawal, fear of attending school, avoidance of or preoccupation with technology) and trust your instinct to intervene if your children don’t seem to be their usual selves.

unsupervised areas).

implementing classroom programs;
4) intervene to turn bullies around by directly addressing
motivational and developmental concerns related to individuals
who bully and those who support bullying; and
5) respond to any problems experienced by those who are bullied
and those who witness bullying.

To prevent bullying, both at school and off campus, it is essential for schools to develop a positive culture and to guide social-emotional learning. This includes implementing policies and fostering attitudes that create warm, inviting environments where students and staff feel safe and supported. Teachers and school support staff play a crucial role in creating that environment; they interact closely with students and can intervene most effectively, setting an example and guiding students to be supportive and caring friends in their learning environment.
